Our final production for the 2006-07 season is The Sisters Rosensweig by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein.
This entertaining play, set in 1991, tells the story of three brilliant, eccentric Jewish sisters (Sara, Pfeni, and Gorgeous) who have come together in London to celebrate the birthday of the eldest, Sara, a successful international banker. Sara’s 17-year old daughter Tess and several male friends are along for the party and the journey. Over several days at Sara’s stylish townhouse, the three sisters are forced to face their lives and how they define themselves; the outer layers of each sister’s personality are peeled away, revealing their neuroses. Wasserstein maintains the strength of each woman, even though it is the men in their lives who often act as the catalysts for change. Another interesting feature of this play is its ability to capture several social and political issues that gave shape to the late 1980s and early 1990s—the fall of the Soviet Union, Reaganomics, and the plight of the homeless, to name a few.
Nominated for five Tony Awards, this endearing and intelligent play is, as The New York Times wrote, “a captivating look at three uncommon women and their quest for love, self-definition, and fulfillment." |
