"Present Laughter is a very light comedy and was written with the sensible object of providing me with a bravura part"
- Noël Coward
The plot of this play (sometimes thought to be semi-autobiographical) follows a few days in the life of successful and self-obsessed actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a theatrical tour in Africa. Amid a series of events bordering on farce, Garry must deal with interruptions from numerous women who want to seduce him, cope with a crazed young playwright, and brace for the impending mid-life crisis of his 40th birthday. This script is loaded with Noël Coward's witty sophistication and charm.
This audacious comedy was a success in New York and London with Broadway revivals starring George C. Scott, Frank Langella, and Victor Garber. Typical of Coward's sparkling dialogue and dazzling wit, Garry finesses the mounting and potentially embarassing social faux pas, fleeing the chaos. |
