The award-winning musical about Don Quixote
The Very Little Theatre, one of the oldest and most successful community theatres in the country, continues its 78th season with a four-week run of the award-winning musical Man of La Mancha, with book by Dale Wasserman, music and lyrics by Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion.
This powerful show, which won five Tony Awards when it debuted on Broadway back in 1965 (including Best Musical and Best Score!), is still as engaging as ever, and with a beautiful score to match. It has been revived four times on Broadway, bringing tens of thousands of new fans to this musical adventure.
Man of La Mancha is a one-act musical (no intermission!) that tells the story of the classic novel Don Quixote as a play within a play, performed by author Miguel de Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.
Cervantes' tale is of knight-errant Don Quixote, his servant Sancho, and the woman of his dreams, the lovely Aldonza/Dulcinea. It tells the romantic and noble journey of a knight who sets out to right all wrongs and win the heart of a good woman as he duels windmills along the way-the classic comic tragedy of man's struggle against all odds to dream impossible dreams. The award-winning musical score is headed by the beautiful and timeless ballad, "The Impossible Dream."
Directors Reva Kaufman and Peg Major have cast Michael P.
Watkins as Don Quixote/Cervantes, Claude Offenbacher as Sancho, Nikki Pagniano as Aldonza, Don Kelley as Dr. Carrasco, Cate Wolfenbarger as Antonia, along with more than a dozen others in the company. Music director is Jim Greenwood, and the dramatic set design is by Bill Campbell.
Reserved seat tickets are $17; senior citizens may attend either of the two Sunday matinees (March 25 and April 1) for $13, and the Thrifty Thursday performances (March 29, April 5 and April 12) are also $13.
The thirteen performances are Friday-Sunday, March 23-25; Thursday-Sunday, March 29-April 1; Thursday-Saturday, April 5-7 (no show on Easter Sunday); and Thursday-Saturday, April 12-14. Curtain is at 8 p.m. except for the 2 p.m. Sunday matinees. The VLT also has ten assisted-listening devices available on a first-come basis each night.
The box office opens on Friday, March 16, from 2-5:30 p.m.
and will continue Wednesday-Saturday the following weeks. For more information on tickets, call 344-7751. The Very Little Theatre is located at 2350 Hilyard St. in Eugene. See the VLT Box Office page for dates and ticket information.
Tams-Witmark says "His dream is Everyman's dream. His tilting at windmills is Everyman's great adventure. Somehow the footlights disappear, time is telescoped, and the 'Man of La Mancha' speaks for humankind."
The show won 5 Tony's, the N.Y. Drama Critics Award for Best Musical, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Production. Book by Dale Wasserman, music by Mitch Leigh, and lyrics by Joe Darion.
Man of La Mancha opens March 23; directed by Reva Kaufman and Peg Major. Music Director Jim Greenwood.
