The Very Little Theatre
presents
The Popular Musical
"GODSPELL"
February 7-9, 2003 in Stage Left
The Very Little Theatre announces a three-performance run of the popular musical Godspell. The show, a revival of the hit production last fall at the Cottage Theatre, will be presented in Stage Left, running Friday -Sunday, Feb. 7-9.
Curtain is 8:15 p.m. except the 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
Godspell, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, is based on the biblical lessons of the Gospel according to St. Matthew. Directed by VLT member Peg Major, the cast of the Cottage Theatre production was eager to continue performing this joyful, tuneful show, and VLT found an opening in its schedule to have them perform in Stage Left for two evenings and one matinee.
Godspell has remained an immensely successful musical over the past 30 years-a joyous celebration of music, mime, comedy, and slapstick. Godspell is often thought of as a "religious" piece, and rightly so, considering the text is straight out of the Gospel of St. Matthew. However, the lessons that the text brings are so timely and universal that they cross any and all barriers . . . simple truths, such as: "always treat others as you would have them treat you" and "judge not, that you yourselves shall not be judged." Godspell also represents the importance of community, innocence, discovery, simple joys, tolerance, friendship, and unconditional love. No wonder it is loved by so many.
The cast is headed by Johnny Ormsbee as Jesus, Davis Smith as Judas and John the Baptist, and the rest of the company, playing various roles, includes Phil Dempsey, Nicole Garibay, Hilary Gorsegner Heinz, Keith Hazen-Diehm, Rebekah Hope, Erika Jane Johnston, Mindy Linder, Miriam Major, and Teri Page. A small instrumental combo will be headed by music director Lee Bottemiller. Choreography is by Erika Jane Johnston and vocal direction is by Nicole Garibay.
