Barefoot in the Park is one of Neil Simon's earliest hits, and remains the favorite of many. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds: he is a conservative button-down lawyer, and she is a bubbly extrovert. They have just moved into a tiny New York fifth-floor apartment with no elevator. All their visitors arrive out of breath, on the verge of collapse.
(As Paul and Corie's mother trudge up the apartment stairs one evening, she says: "I feel like we've died ... and gone to heaven ... only we had to climb up!")
In the space of three days of setting up housekeeping, Paul and Corie go through every emotional stage of a young marriage. Add Corie's somewhat prudish mother and the charming upstairs neighbor, Victor Velasco, and you get a delightful comedy that is guaranteed to bring lots of smiles. |
