Set in 1940s Mexico, this compelling drama first opened on Broadway in 1961 and the film version on an Academy Award. The story centers on Rev. T. Lawrence Shannon, who has been relived of his cloth for various improprieties. now a tour guide, he heads a busload of middle-aged Baptist women on a tour of the Mexican coast. Within the broken-down environs of a cheap resort hotel, he spars with the sex-starved widow who owns the hotel and a gentle New England spinster, all the while coming to terms with the failure haunting his life.
